ASK Dr. Riggins:

What is Lipodissolve?
Lipo-dissolve is a procedure that involves multiple microinjections of a compound called phosphatidylcholine deoxycholate (PCDC). Most treatments require three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart to achieve desired results, although small areas such as the cheeks might require just one. Best results are for patients with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30. These are generally people who may work out and are the appropriate weight height and weight for their frame but have certain areas that just don't respond to the exercise and dietary regimen that they have employed. Remember, this is for spot fat reduction and not a weight loss procedure.

What medications are used?
There are many combinations of medicines that can be used in the formulation of the Lipo-Dissolve injection but Dr. Riggins uses the basic Phosphatidylcholine Deoxycholate mixture because it is the most effective with fewer allergic reactions and/or side effects.

Phosphatidylcholine is extracted from the soybean, and deoxycholate is a synthetic manufactured to behave like the naturally occurring deoxycholate, which is a bile salt. The ingredients in the compound work to break apart fat cells and flush them through the body in the lymphatic system of waste removal. A recent UCLA study showed that deoxycholate destroys fat cells.

How does Lipodissolve work?
It is presumed that the phosphatidylcholine penetrates the wall of the fat cell and acts as an emulsifying agent, making fats water soluble, which allows them to be carried to the liver and eliminated. Physicians in Europe and South America who have been using PCDC in fat-removal procedures and have been studying the effects of PCDC in the body for more than a decade are not sure of its precise mechanism of action. The deoxycholate used in PCDC is a synthetic manufactured to behave like the naturally occurring deoxycholate which is a bile salt. In the human body deoxycholate works to dissolve fat. In this treatment process the deoxycholate aids in weakening the fat cell walls to permit the compound to break down the fat cells and remove them from the body. Deoxycholate also makes the phosphatidylcholine soluble enough to be injected into the fat deposits and transported through the body.
