What is Botox?

Botox is a purified version of a toxin that, when injected, temporarily reduces muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles. Botox has medical applications (such as for excessive sweating) as well as aesthetic purposes. It offers a nonsurgical way to look more youthful. Nearly 7 million Botox procedures are performed annually and it’s approved for use in 96 countries.

What areas can be treated with Botox?

Botox is FDA-approved to smooth lines and wrinkles in common areas of complaint. These include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical frown lines
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes

Talk to Dr. Riggins about your areas of concern, and he can help devise a treatment plan for you. He may combine Botox with dermal fillers to reduce the appearance of other wrinkles and fill in hollow contours, too.

What should I expect during a Botox treatment session?

Botox is injected into key areas of your face, according to your desired results. For your crow’s feet, you receive three injections around each eye. For the forehead, five injections for horizontal lines and five injections for glabellar lines. You can select which of these areas (or all) that you want treated.

Dr. Riggins uses a very tiny needle. You may feel some pinching, but it’s only the most minimal discomfort. The entire treatment takes just about 10 minutes. Results are usually noticeable within 24-48 hours.

How long do the results of Botox last?

Botox reduces lines and wrinkles for three to four months, depending on the area treated and how your body responds. After that, you can receive maintenance treatments to maintain your more youthful look. With regular retreatments, the effects of your injections may last 6-8 months as the muscles naturally learn to relax.

Do I need to schedule downtime following Botox injections?

You can go right back to all your daily activities following Botox treatment. You may have some mild swelling or bruising at the injection sites, but this fades within a day or two and can be covered with makeup.
